| Photos from my 8 day trip to Switzerland, travelling out via Eurostar and then from Paris forward via Belfort, Mulhouse and Basel.
Staying in Filisur I mainly concentrated on covering the metre guage Rhätische Bahn network, whose main line runs from Chur to St Moritz with branches out to Disentis/Mustér, Scuol-Tarasp, Arosa, Davos and Tirano (Italy). I had not been to this area of Switzerland since 1991, but any fears that modernisation would have swept away the more interesting aspects of the RhB were unfounded. There is still street running at Chur, a daily mixed service from Chur to Samedan, and even occasional appearences put in by the 4 remaining vintage 'Krokodil' locos which date back to the 1920s. The majority of trains on the railway are loco-hauled, with only a small number of units working local services (the way things should be!) The St. Moritz - Tirano services are also operated by units due to the different electrification system on the route. On the standard gauge SBB network there are still plenty of the absolutely hellfire Re4/4 locos working passenger trains too. |
